Baptisia

Long-lived perennials for full sun.  Baptisias have a large, rounded form, and a soft texture which contrasts well in the border with more upright material. Gray-green foliage and graceful lupine-like bloomstalks lend a gentility that belies its tough-as-toenails reputation.

Blooming Season:  April - May

Plant Habit: upright

Characteristics: attracts butterflies, drought- tolerant, and deer- resistant perennial

Uses: These tall, bushy perennials are a great addition to the back of the sunny garden or as a focal point for the center of an island bed. They can also create a dramatic effect when planted in small groups.

australis (False Indigo)

Beautiful 10"-12" spikes of indigo-blue flowers rise above attractive foliage. The lovely pea-shaped flowers are followed by intriguing ornamental seedpods which mature to a deep charcoal gray. The dried seeds in the pods produce a pleasant rattling sound in the autumn breezes; may need staking.  2010 Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year.
