Yet another member of the carrot family,
fennel grows to over 6', so give it plenty of room; the feathery
foliage, which often persists through the winter, can be chopped and
added to salads or used to flavor fish dishes and hors d'oeuvres,
and can also add a delicate appearance to flower arrangements; the
seeds can be used in breads, cakes, and pastries. Be sure to plant
enough for yourself and the swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. |
