Blackeyed
Susans, or Rudbeckia hirta, are native, roadside summer bloomers
throughout the Eastern United States. The flowers, and later seeds, attract butterflies
and hungry birds. Some Rudbeckias are annuals, while
others will behave as perennials. They will withstand dry
conditions (think roadside during a sweltering Alabama summer) but
will do best if given adequate moisture. To prevent fungal problems
on the bristly foliage, it's best to water early in the day so the
foliage is dry going into the evening. |
